The monkey did not lose his mind and tried to remain calm. He told the crocodile that he would do anything for his dear friend, but that he had left his heart at the tree. He asked the crocodile to swim him back to the tree, which the crocodile readily agreed to do. As soon as they reached near the river bank, the monkey hopped back on the tree, out of the crocodile’s reach. Thus, he was able to save himself.

Answer:
The last sentence of the story suggests that the crocodile regretted his decision to betray the monkey. He was genuinely sad. He would probably berate his wife for wanting him to betray a dear friend, or to tell her how clever the monkey turned out to be.
